Online seminar: Mind the GAAP

An Accounting Cafe online seminar at 3pm on 16 September 2022 with a call to action for institutions to collaborate in their provision of employability opportunities and skills for accounting and finance students.

Richard Cartwright, University of Southampton

Mind the GAAP has been a collaboration between Accounting and Finance students and staff at the University of Southampton. Pre-Covid it hosted a series of regular events to boost collaboration and collegiality. These co-curricular events brought together Recognised Supervisory Bodies, professional services firms and others to help students learn more about the accounting and auditing professions, enhance their employability skills, have some fun and typically eat some pizza.

During the first lockdown these events were successfully migrated online and attended by influential individuals from across the nation. However, engagement dropped off as Zoom / Teams fatigue set in, to the point where many sessions were no longer viable.

There is need and opportunity to create a sector-wide online community giving it critical mass for it to be self-sustaining.

Seminar hosted by Richard Cartwright.

Richard is a qualified charted accountant and a recognised expert in developing extra and co-curricular activities. He is a Non Executive Director at an NHS Foundation Trust, a governor at Motability, and an independent external member of the Audit and Risk Assurance Committee at the National Audit Office.

Richard has been identified as one of the 100 most influential disabled people in the UK.
