The future of accounting

Redefining accounting for tomorrow

Now is the time to create accounting that is better suited to today’s realities

A message from Professor Garry Carnegie

The means of accounting that we teach are hyper-developed, while the ends seem under-articulated, hazy and even opaque.

The rhetoric of acounting’s ethics and public interest benefits are increasing ringing hollow without a reckoning with its real-world organisational, social and environmental impacts.

Fundamentally, accounting must re-examine its reason for existing with its purpose remodelled to shape a better world in the public interest rather than as the language of business or as decision-usefulness in financial reports.

For students — tomorrow’s leaders — now is the time to create accounting that is better suited to today’s major challenging issues and aspire to reach its full potential. One that prizes ethical rigour, social responsibility, and moral purpose as much as technical mastery.

Don’t ask what accounting can do for you. Ask what you can do for accounting in shaping a better world.

I encourage you, along with the global community of accountants, to innovative by prioritising the flourishing of organisations, people and nature.
